ART GALLERY OF NEW SOUTH WALES

MAMAN

In my opinion, the piece of art called "Maman" by Louise Bourgeois is the most interesting one at the Art Gallery in New South Wales. This amazing sculpture created by the French-American artist, immediately caught my attention when I saw it.

Maman is a giant spider sculpture placed in the gallery. It stands more than 9 metres high and 10 metres wide. It is made of bronze, steel and marble. It was made in 1999 and it is free to see for all at any hour.

What made me focus on it was that there is a very similar one in Bilbao, where I live, next to the famous Guggenheim museum. Both spider sculptures were made by Bourgeois. There are seven more sculptures like these around the world, such as at Tate Modern in the UK or at Athen’s Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center.

Apart from this incredible spider, after visiting the Art Gallery I would highlight its extensive collection of Aboriginal art. From traditional dot paintings to contemporary works, the gallery beautifully shows the diverse artistic expressions of Australia's Indigenous peoples. It is also fabulous how well the art pieces are preserved.
